  247.        An Expert System is computer software that can solve real
  248.   world problems requiring logic, decision making and knowledge
  249.   processing.  Expert Systems can also categorize, consult, analyze,
  250.   and diagnose.  These software tools are useful in areas that
  251.   formerly required a human expert. Expert Systems use deductive
  252.   reasoning to solve problems that are often unstructured, and
  253.   would be impossible to approach with conventional procedural
  254.   computer techniques.

  256.        An Expert System Shell is an Expert System minus its
  257.   knowledgebase and domain.  It is an Expert System ready to be
  258.   taught the rules of knowledge in a particular field.  An
  259.   Expert System Toolkit is something more: a shell plus an organized
  260.   set of software tools to assist in developing it into a full
  261.   expert system.  Usually, this includes an editor for building
  262.   the IF-THEN rules that make up the rulebase, a trace facility
  263.   for testing the way the rules interact, hooks to pre-existing
  264.   databases and spreadsheets, and a sophisticated user interface
  265.   that hopefully hides all these tools from the user during
  266.   the run-time consultation.

  269.    TURBO EXPERT TOOLKIT
  270.      The Turbo Expert System Toolkit is based on confidence
  271.      factors (10 means yes, 0 means no, 5 means maybe, 9 means
  272.      almost definitely, etc.)  In addition, with this Toolkit
  273.      you are relieved of the difficult assignment of creating
  274.      an IF-THEN rulebase in a separate ASCII text editor.
  275.      The Turbo Expert Toolkit presents the absolutely
  276.      most direct menu driven approach to generating your own
  277.      rule-based backward chaining expert system.  When it is
  278.      complete, your expert system will ask you (or the user of
  279.      your system) a series of questions (QUERIES) to be answered

  289.      ESIE is the acronym for Expert System Inference Engine, and
  290.      that is exactly what it is.  ESIE loads in a knowledge base,
  291.      and builds inferences out of the IF-THEN rules, to
  292.      act like an Advisor.  It is an Artificial Intelligence expert
  293.      system shell.  An infinite multitude of knowledge bases can

  297.      The IMP Shell is a powerful expert system
  298.      development environment for the IBM-PC.

  303.      IMP expert systems are rule based,  backwards

  321.       environment.  Access to Lotus and Dbase files is included.
  322.       You  can use XXXPERT to develop expert systems that use rules

  338.       be supplied by the calling process.

  367.       THE  EXPERT takes both rules and facts in the form of  ASCII
  368.       strings,  so  it  is  not,  at present,  suited  for  any  direct
  369.       manipulation  of  numeric  information.  A  rule  is  a  list  of
  370.       potential  facts  -- conditions -- and another list of  facts  --
  371.       results  -- that become true when the list of conditions is  met.
  372.       Both  conditions and results can be stated in either positive  or
  373.       negative form.  Each list must have at least one member; there is
  374.       no  structural  limitation  on the number of members a  list  may
  375.       have.

  377.              The results obtained from THE EXPERT can be only as good  as
  378.       the  rulebase  used.  At  present,  it is  entirely  possible  to
  379.       construct worse-than-useless rulebases.  If it proves feasible, a
  380.       rulebase-editing  utility program will do some testing of logical
  381.       consistence and overall quality of rulebases. For now, one should
  382.       keep  in mind that THE EXPERT does NOT eliminate  thinking  -- it
  383.       merely requires that one do it right just once.
